Taking the Shock Out of the Brittle Zone

Text, Photography, and Diagrams by Bob Leatherbarrow

A look into how thermal shock occurs when firing warm glass projects. Various aspects of glass properties including its poor conductivity of heat, various thicknesses, and the viscosity of the glass are covered. Techniques are then offered for ways to help glass escape thermal shock as it travels through the brittle zone while firing in the kiln.
